Held at various locations in Alta and Salt Lake, these free events are a great way to learn more about the environment of Little Cottonwood Canyon and Utah!
Dates for future events will be announced soon. Make sure to RSVP as they are likely to fill up quickly!

Scott Hotaling is a professor in the Department of Watershed Sciences at Utah State University. He received his PhD in 2017 and joined the Utah State faculty in 2022. At USU, he leads the Climate Change in Mountains Lab where his team studies how recent climate change is impacting mountain regions. He is also USU Extension’s Climate Adaptation Specialist. In this role, he works with a wide array of entities to solve the climate challenges facing Utah and the surrounding region. A climbing ranger turned mountain scientist, Dr. Hotaling brings a unique perspective to academic research and extension by integrating long-term data collection, storytelling, and his own experiences. Climate Change and the Future of the Wasatch
Presented by Scott Hotaling
In this presentation, Dr. Scott Hotaling will discuss how the Wasatch and surrounding mountains are changing, new areas of exciting research, and how communities, nonprofits, and agencies can make a difference to protect the mountains. Specifically, he will discuss rock glaciers—a critical area of emerging research in a warming world—and a new initiative at Utah State University to integrate mountain research, education, and outreach to bolster the future of our mountains.

Join Friends of Alta and wildlife conservation biologist Shawn Pladas for an insightful session on the Black Rosy-Finch's. Shawn will introduce the species’ background, highlighting important knowledge gaps and ongoing threats that impact its survival. Learn about innovative research approaches used to address these gaps, including RFID tracking and stable isotope analysis. Shawn will also share exciting details about new studies involving the Motus Wildlife Tracking System and bird tagging efforts, offering a glimpse into how technology helps scientists monitor movement and behavior. This event is a great chance to discover more about this elusive alpine bird, the challenges it faces, and cutting-edge conservation efforts underway to protect it.
