Projects

The world is filled with unique shipping container projects of various types…if you can find them. And the odds are high that you’re close to a container home or building right now and don’t even know it.

Fortunately, we’ve created a database of container projects from around the world, plus a powerful tool that you can use to search through the database and find the types and locations of container projects that capture your interest. Read more about how to use the Projects tool below, then scroll down to start looking for awesome container homes, buildings, and other projects!

About the Projects Database

The Discover Containers Project Database is the most complete resource for finding and learning about the shipping container homes, hotels, malls, and other creations that have been built in countries across the globe. The database is unique for two reasons: the quality of the information is contains (location data, points of contact, pictures, etc.) and the ease with which is can be searched and filtered to find exactly what you’re looking for.

Looking for an exciting weekend escape, or a unique place to unwind on that upcoming dream vacation? A container home rental might just be the answer! However, the usual short term rental platforms like AirBnB, Homeaway, Booking.com, etc. don’t let you focus specifically on container homes for rent. And, they leave out container home rentals that use other platforms and websites.

You can look at the incredible shipping container projects we feature on Instagram for hours, but there is something special about actually being inside one.

Perhaps you’re just looking for a unique getaway in a place (geographically AND architecturally speaking) that is out of the ordinary.  Maybe you’re interested in a container home but want to actually see one in person before you commit (which we highly recommend!).  Or are you looking for in-person design inspiration from those who have gone before you and already created container homes?

Regardless, if you haven’t seen a container building in person, you owe it to yourself to take a visit. And you don’t have to think of it as purely a fact-finding mission, you’re sure to have a great time exploring the areas nearby a container cabin rental too.

Our effort to collect and organize this information has resulted in what is by far the most expansive listing of shipping container house rentals online. The list includes private homes, hotels, and hostels…all made from one or more shipping containers. Some are huge, some are tiny.  Some are luxurious, some are basic.  What they all have in common is the core building block of shipping containers.

To find these container house rentals, select the “Short Term Rental” Project Type below in the Project Database search tool.

Note: If our list is missing a great shipping container rental, Contact Us and let us know where it is and how to contact the owners or book it online!

Perhaps you aren’t looking to necessarily visit and stay in a container home, but just want to look at examples of shipping container houses that others have built. An important part of the container house design process is looking for inspiration in what’s already been done.

Our project database makes it super simple to find the types of container projects you’re interested in possible building. You can search by project type, location, or both.

For each container project in our database, we’ve found as many details, pictures, drawings, size, and location information as we could possibly track down. This makes sure you get as much information (and inspiration!) as possible.

Feel free to incorporate ideas from container homes you visit, but know that most owners will be hesitant to share the construction drawings for their home. This is especially true if they used a professional architect, who may have rules about distributing the design.

In addition, as you look at the container creations that others have built, we caution you to pay particularly close attention to the climate of the location. If the container building is in a different climate than yours, there may be some differences in how you should approach insulation and condensation control.

Favorite Interviews with Container Rental Owners

We’ve also had the great fortune to interview some of the owners of the projects you’ll find in the database. These interviews are much longer and more detailed than the typical project database entries and offer a glympe into the design and construction process these people navigated. Here are a few of our favorite interviews:

While the majority of our Container Project Database entries are shipping container homes, single family houses are far from the only type of container project we feature. The Project Type filter below allows you to focus on some of these less-common options by selecting “Educational”, “Office”, “Retail”, or “Other”. The “Other” project type is a catch-all for container projects so unique they defy categories, so it’s certainly worth a visit. If you’d rather focus on a single type of project, you can browse the database by type via this link: Project Types.

And if you’re looking for even more non-residential project ideas, our case study overviews are just the place for you. Here we cover various types of portable, semi-permanent, and permanent container projects like container offices, container garagescontainer farmscontainer medical clinicscontainer pools, and more!
