When LaTonya M. Goffney, Ed.D., became superintendent of Aldine Independent School District in Texas, she set out to change the narrative on early literacy for the district’s 53,000 students. Inspired by her grandfather—who signed his name with a careful “X” and told her, “LaTonya, if you could read, you can go anywhere”—Goffney confronted low expectations head-on and led a districtwide shift in reading instruction centered on explicit phonics, background knowledge, and access to complex, on-grade-level texts.
Just as importantly, she brought the work to life through weekly classroom visits and robust teacher support. From the 2023–2024 to the 2024–2025 school year, Aldine saw measurable gains on the STAAR: third-grade reading proficiency increased by 5%, fourth grade by 7%, and fifth grade by 11%—showing what’s possible when leaders pair bold vision with sustained implementation.
