Another Week of Pax Americana

Trump can’t stop praising Delcy. Team Machado says the opposition leader will head to Madrid soon. Ruling chavismo and the remnants of the 2015 National Assembly will apparently combine efforts in the US dispute over Venezuelan assets.

Takeaways from Delcy’s speech last night (minus humbug):

  • Said future wage hikes must avoid fueling inflation while spromising a raise for May 1st (Workers’ Day in Venezuela).
  • Floated a “new” labor and social security framework for the country.
  • Pushed the idea of a more efficient state, including what sounds like an anti-red tape law.
  • On privatization: chavismo (“another commission”) will decide what counts as “strategic” assets, but oil is “out of bounds.”
  • “Venezuela needs an efficient tax system.”
  • Said frozen assets abroad are key to fixing wages, oil output, the power grid, and the water crisis. Wants to ramp up efforts on that front.
  • Called for a housing reform, saying 500,000 homes need to enter the market.
