Barnstable Superior Courthouse Restoration Project
The Barnstable Superior Courthouse, located in Barnstable Village, Massachusetts, has served as the seat of justice on Cape Cod for nearly 200 years. Constructed in 1832 in the Greek Revival style and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, the courthouse remains a central part of the County’s civic and judicial life.
Barnstable County is undertaking a comprehensive restoration of the courthouse to preserve the structure and ensure its continued use for future generations. This marks the first major renovation effort since the 1972 addition.
The project is led by Barnstable County as building owner, in coordination with the Massachusetts Trial Court as tenant, along with Gale Associates as architect and ClearPath Advisors as Owner’s Project Manager. The scope of work includes restoration of exterior granite, mortar, cast stone, wood columns, cornice, windows, and trim, as well as interior structural repairs to the basement foundation. The project scope is based on a building envelope and structural assessment completed by Building Conservation Associates, Inc. in January 2022.
The project was included in the County’s FY2025 Capital Improvement Plan with an estimated total cost of $7 million. Under the terms of the Trial Court lease agreement, 75 percent of eligible project costs are expected to be reimbursed, representing approximately $5.25 million.
Design, permitting, and final construction documents have been completed, and the project is currently in the construction bid phase. The County anticipates awarding the construction contract in May 2026, with construction expected to begin on July 6, 2026, and continue through Summer 2027.
Planning is underway to ensure continuity of court operations during construction. Some offices will be temporarily relocated within the County complex to accommodate the work.
Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to sign up for updates to stay informed on project progress, timelines, and impacts.
Courthouse History
For nearly two centuries, the Barnstable Superior Courthouse has played a central role in the civic life of Cape Cod, serving generations of residents through an evolving legal system.
Designed in the Greek Revival style, the building reflects a period when public architecture was intended to convey stability, order, and confidence in government institutions. Its prominent location in Barnstable Village has made it both a working courthouse and a recognizable landmark within the community.
While an addition in the early 1970s expanded the building’s functionality, much of the original structure has remained intact. Today, the courthouse continues to function as an active judicial facility while also standing as a historic asset—linking Cape Cod’s past with its present.
