What is Backslash?

BACKSLASH is a youth association based in Valencia, Spain, focused on strengthening young people’s capacities and promoting social inclusion through education and training. We have a diverse team consisting of 4 staff members, 10 external collaborators, and 15 volunteers, all committed to making a positive impact in the community.

Our mission is to drive the sustainable development of local communities and empower individuals through human rights education, the promotion of democratic values, and international cooperation. To achieve this mission, our departments focus on the following key areas:

  • Entrepreneurship: We support young people in their professional development by providing guidance, mentorship, and encouraging active participation. We believe youth entrepreneurship contributes to a more sustainable and resilient local economy.
  • Social Rights: We work for social inclusion, gender equality, European citizenship, and the rights of young people, children, migrants, and refugees. We are committed to dignity and respect for all and promote equitable access to opportunities.
  • Culture: We promote contemporary culture, access to culture, cultural heritage, artistic expression, and support for young artists. For BACKSLASH, culture is an essential tool for understanding and tolerance, and we create opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in cultural activities.
  • Environment: We promote environmental protection, sustainability, climate action, the circular economy, and education on environmental issues. Our responsibility is to protect the natural environment for future generations, raising awareness and involving the community in environmental advocacy.
  • Communication and IT: We develop digital learning tools, mobile applications, and audiovisual materials to support the work of our departments and promote youth learning and participation.

Throughout our history, BACKSLASH has participated in numerous European projects through Erasmus+, focusing on entrepreneurship, social inclusion, the environment, and culture. We have also worked on projects under the REC program to combat gender-based violence in schools and participated in the Europe for Citizens and Creative Europe programs, promoting active citizenship and supporting the contemporary cultural sector.

Additionally, we have been accredited as Host Entrepreneurs through Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs, hosting new entrepreneurs from other countries to guide them in starting their businesses.

We are also proud of our participation in the European Solidarity Corps, sending more than 20 volunteers annually to collaborate with organizations across Europe.

BACKSLASH is a member of CONNECT International, a network based in Brussels that promotes digital rights and the digital agenda in Europe. We are also part of networks such as the PRISMA European Network, the European Network for Innovation for Inclusion, and the Anna Lindh Foundation. These partnerships allow us to share knowledge and resources with like-minded organizations, amplifying our impact locally and globally.

BACKSLASH actively participates in the local youth council and contributes to the improvement of youth policies in the city and region, working closely with both administrations and representatives. The organization has its offices in the municipal youth department building, where we also advise young people on the opportunities that Europe offers in terms of work, education, training, and volunteering, promoting a broader concept of European citizenship and cross-border mobility.
