concept design
Here is where the creativity starts. Concept design is all about sketching, exploring new idea’s and exciting forms for the new product. This is where the dream becomes tangible.
sketching
In our studio we use large walls full of sketches, so that everyone in the team, even those that are not directly involved in the project, can see progress and direction.
Early sketches are mostly quick scribbles to explore the very early rough idea’s about shape and build up of a new bike or product.
Later sketches are of higher quality and focus more on a certain design direction based on a technical solution. These directions include sketches of innovative functional solutions, form exploration, creating ergonomic solutions, integration of components, connections and parts and quickly testing with rough mockups.
Mostly there are several design directions and through sketching we explore whether a concept design direction is feasible and fits to the strategy. This also includes considering factors like cost, materials, and manufacturing processes.
look-in-the-kitchen
During the concept design phase, we have a so called ‘look-in-the-kitchen’ meeting with your team. We present concept directions in sketch-form, functional and technical solutions, manufacturing solutions and mockups.
Together with your team we discuss focus, risk, level of ambition and make a decision which concept direction to develop further.

one concept
During the design process our senior design team selects and combines the best idea’s into a design direction that we believe is the best for you.
This means we do not fully develop three concepts, from which you will need to choose the best. We show you what we think is the best concept direction and together with your team we make small adjustments to the concept design direction.
We create detailed sketches with cross-sections, splitlines, fillets, etc. in preparation for the technical development and 3D CAD modeling.
After the ‘look-in-the-kitchen’ meeting it can happen that we add some more details to the concept, but basically we are ready to further develop the product in the engineering stage.

models
During the concept design stage we create mockups and models and evaluate them on functionality, ergonomics and performance.
Creating models is a crucial part to see if the solutions we think are good actually work well.
We test the models and use the outcomes in further sketching sessions and concept development.
next step
Now your product has been designed as a concept we smoothly enter the phase of engineering to bring more detail to the new product.
