OUR HISTORY

ELA Center – Date Unknown

Camp Paivika – 1951

In 1926, in response to the pre-vaccine polio epidemic, a small group of business leaders from the Los Angeles Rotary Club made a bold decision: children with physical disabilities in Southern California deserved dedicated services and support. They took action, establishing the Crippled Children’s Society of Southern California—the organization known today as AbilityFirst™. From that commitment and leadership, a legacy of innovation and inclusion was set in motion.

What started as a focused community initiative has grown into a dynamic network of programs supporting children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Southern California. Throughout our history, AbilityFirst has continually evolved to meet emerging needs—expanding its reach, strengthening its programs, and adapting its services to reflect the priorities of the community it serves.

AbilityFirst has long been at the forefront of innovation and advocacy. It pioneered some of California’s first community-based services for children with disabilities, set a national benchmark for accessibility with the design and construction of one of the country’s first fully accessible camps (Camp Paivika), and sponsored and helped secure passage of California State Senate Bill 309, ensuring young adults with developmental disabilities could participate in after-school programs throughout high school.

In 2000, the organization formally adopted the name AbilityFirst to reflect its forward-looking mission and enduring commitment to access, inclusion, and belonging. Its history reflects an unwavering belief: every person deserves opportunity, community, and the chance to thrive.
