How Repair Cafe Works

What is Repair Café?

We throw away vast amounts of stuff. Even things with almost nothing wrong, which could get a new lease on life after a simple repair. The trouble is, lots of people have forgotten that they can repair things themselves or they no longer know how. Knowing how to make repairs is a skill quickly lost. Repair Café changes all that! People who might otherwise be sidelined are getting involved again. Valuable practical knowledge is getting passed on. Things are being used for longer and don’t have to be thrown away. This reduces the volume of raw materials and energy needed to make new products. It cuts CO2 emissions, for example, because manufacturing new products causes CO2 to be released.

Change mindsets

  • Recycle
  • Reuse
  • Relove
  • Help Save the Planet

Repair Café teaches people to see their possessions in a new light. And, once again, to appreciate their value. Repair Café helps change people’s mindset. This is essential to kindle people’s enthusiasm for a sustainable society. But most of all, Repair Café just wants to show how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is. Why don’t you give it a go?

Funding
We offer our repair service for free but ask for a donation to cover operating costs.

Our Mission

To cultivate awareness of the bigger picture and of the pronounced impact reuse has on the environment, on personal well-being, and on our community's resiliency;
To cultivate motivation to extend the life of the things we have through repair; and
To cultivate the capacity to repair, through learning to fix things ourselves, or finding out how and where to have them repaired.

Thank you to the team for all your help. Bedside lamps repaired so saved from the dump and no need to buy new ones. Brilliant service and everyone so friendly. 👏

I was SO impressed! It was extremely efficient and welcoming. We would be delighted if you were to return to Lychpit Hall in the future and are happy to do whatever we can to support your return. Thank you very much indeed for coming to Old Basing & Lychpit and for offering your excellent, talented services to our residents!

I just want to say a HUGE thank you to Diana. She spent a ridiculous amount of hours fixing my son's 'unrepairable' toy cat and we're beyond grateful for the time spent, care and compassion she showed with the incredibly hard job of making Leo look just like Leo again. My son hasn't stopped smiling and cuddling Leo since he received him back in Friday. What a kind and lovely lady Diana is. I hope she knows how grateful and thrilled we are, but I just wanted to thank her again via your site. You all do a great job, and we're lucky to have you in our area. Thank you.

Vanessa

Very many thanks to you and your wonderful team for organising the Repair Cafe in Silchester yesterday. Everyone that I have spoken to was very happy, and delighted with the repairs that your team were able to carry out. I've published a few of the photos that we took from today on our Facebook and Instagram pages: https://www.facebook.com/sustainablesilchester/posts/pfbid0Us2nXCc91LZVn8NnSMfTYmUgsDnCZrKubWSronfTQc16hLJr56EWtsEW4XFJ2BXWl We do hope that you will consider visiting Silchester again!!!

Thank you for saving my Vacuum Cleaner! You guys are the best!

Charlie says the performance and speed (of his PC) has vastly improved and it’s not freezing anymore so thank you for everything you did.
I will take a look at your suggestions too and appreciate the time you took to put this together.
Thank you for the time you took fixing it on the day and to everyone being so welcoming and friendly.
It’s such a great initiative to have locally and I’m sure it’s been a valuable asset to many people that have had repairs and advice from the sessions.

Lisa

Huge thanks to Gary and Simon who did an incredible job on repairing my sewing machine. Their experuse and patience was amazing!
