Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model Documentary Review

Many girls say they want to be models when they grow up.

The new Netflix documentary, Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, was recently released. This three-part documentary introduces (or reintroduces) audiences to the early 2000s reality show, America’s Next Top Model. Among the interviewees are creator/host/mentor Tyra Banks, her fellow judges/consultants, the behind-the-scenes team, several contestants, and critics of the show.

Hindsight, it is said, is 20/20. This is the main theme of the film. Though it’s only been twenty-plus years since it hit the airwaves, certain things have changed for the better. The smartest thing that Banks (and those who worked on the program) admitted was that mistakes were made. It’s hard (specifically when they are in your face, figuratively speaking), but necessary when it comes to healing old wounds and moving on from what was.

Do I recommend it? Yes.

There was a time in my life when Dawson’s Creek was must-see TV. Now it feels like a bygone era. Cancer sucks. My prayers go out to his family, his friends, and the millions of fans who have followed his career over the years.

RIP. May his memory be a blessing. Z”l.

RIP Shannen Doherty

Cancer sucks. It ends lives far too quickly and forces those of us who are still here to ask “what if?”.

Shannen Doherty passed away yesterday from breast cancer. She was 53.

Best remembered for Beverly Hills, 90210, and Charmed, she entertained a generation of television viewers who grew up with her.

May her memory be a blessing. Z”L.

Frosted Tips with Lance Bass Podcast Review

Every generation has its own musical artists that define the era. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, boy bands were everywhere. Many young girls (myself included) screamed our lungs out for our favorite performers.

Frosted Tips with Lance Bass is the newest podcast on the nostalgia block. Hosted by former NSYNC member Lance Bass and his husband, Michael Turchin, the guest in each episode is a member of one of the boy bands that specifies that time period.

I am loving this podcast. I am laughing, I am smiling, and I am enjoying myself. It is the perfect time machine that for a brief time, takes me back to when life was not so complicated.

Do I recommend it? Absolutely.

Thoughts On the Discontinuation of the iPod

The technology of a certain era can tell us a lot about the world in which it existed.

In the early 2000s, Apple released the iPod. This little device changed the music industry, allowing fans to pick and choose which songs they wanted to buy and/or listen to. Last week, the company announced that the product is being discontinued.

I bought my iPod more than ten years ago. It lasted until earlier this year when the battery died and I had to replace it. I’m not one of those people who, technology-wise, is brand loyal only to Apple. I’m more of a mix and match kind of person. What I love about this device is its simplicity, its ingenuity, and how much it can do than simply play music.

I came into this world in the early 1980s, when records were still king. By the time I was in junior high in the early 1990s, everyone was listening to music via tapes. Flash forward another ten years and CDs were giving way to mp3s and other early forms of digital music. When I was in college, Napster and LimeWire were the rage, even if their legal footing was on shaky ground.

Saying goodbye to the iPod is not going to be easy. It represents not just a generational change in technology, but also how our world has changed overall in the last twenty years or so.

RIP iPod, thanks for the years and the memories.

Why is the World Silent about Afghani Women When They Made so Much Noise about Israel?

I would love to say that in 2021, women across the world have broken the glass ceiling. The archaic rules of what is “acceptable” for the female gender is nothing but a memory. But the truth is that for every achievement and every right that is ours to claim, there are many who still believe that a woman’s place is in the home.

Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan last week, the fear of Afghani women is that they will be forced back into the extreme restrictions they were forced to live under in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. Though the country’s new leadership has promised to not re-instate the old rules, it is a promise that seems to be more talk than action.

Their promises are akin the Women of the Wall “allowed” to pray in peace at the Western Wall by the Ultra-Orthodox Jews.

Speaking of Israel, the world’s reaction to what is happening on the ground in Afghanistan is nothing compared to crap the Jewish state received in the spring. Where is the anger, the outrage, the articles in the press and the posts via celebrities on social media? It is crickets compared to collective noise directed at Israel in May.

The fact is that the country gets shit on no matter what it does. But when there is a life and death issue the affects another nation is facing, the racket from the rest of the world is a pittance. Meanwhile in Israel, women have been free to live their own lives for decades.

Silence speaks more than any word can.
