A dying lady’s wisdom

Her grandmother and my grandmother were best friends.

Her mother and my mother were best friends.

Her uncle made it possible for me to come to Australia.

Her grandmother loaned my wife and me enough money to pay the deposit for our first house.

For many years, I thought we were cousins, so close were the two families.

She died on 30th January, 2022. Last July, when she was told she only had a few months to live, she wrote this:

July 2021

To my family and friends,

Now I am ready to write the last chapter of my autobiography. Some time during 2020 I found some lumps in my left thigh. I was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma. After treatment, the cancer in my left leg died and I had surgery to remove the lump that was left. But the cancer was not cured and in June 2021 I was told that the cancer had spread to my brain and that I had approximately 3 to 4 months left to live.

Dear family and friends, please do not be sad. I will be 79 next month and I had a full life and I achieved all my goals. I am satisfied and I am grateful for the gift of life I was given. I have a wonderful family and great friends. I appreciate every one of you, and I am very thankful for your friendship, love and support. I am feeling fine and I am at peace with myself and the world and I am ready to hand over the baton to the younger generation.

I wish each and every one of you a long and happy life. Please do not mourn but celebrate life with me. L’chaim!

Love and good wishes.

Farewell,
Esther Simons

About Dr Bob Rich

I am a professional grandfather. My main motivation is to transform society to create a sustainable world in which my grandchildren and their grandchildren in perpetuity can have a life, and a life worth living. This means reversing environmental idiocy that's now threatening us with extinction, and replacing culture of greed and conflict with one of compassion and cooperation.
