#MayDay 20: Poem – Cherita – “Sundaes” #amwritingpoetry


For Day 20, the prompt is Ice cream with syrup, sprinkles, and candy and plain ice cream with no toppings.

Cherita–“Cherita is a linked poetry form of one-, two-, and three-line stanzas. Cherita is the Malay word for “story” or “tale”.”

Isn’t it obvious, ice cream with chocolate fudge sauce, peanuts, dark chocolate chips, and whipped cream — that’s the best tasting sundae.

These toppings are the crown on a wonderful summer treat, but I’ll skip the sprinkles.

Sometimes it depends on the ice cream flavor– is it chocolate brownie fudge, vanilla bean, mint chocolate chip, tin roof sundae, tiger, strawberry cheesecake, or cookie dough?

It also depends on the person, but all these mouthwatering toppings can satisfy anyone.

You could add real strawberries, caramel sauce, pecans, or perhaps, one of the best: pour walnuts and maple sauce on maple walnut ice cream — a family favorite.

Ice cream’s wonderful because they’re a plethora of options both in flavors and toppings to satisfy the most choosy connoisseurs age three to age ninety-nine.

For NaPoWriMo Day 3, the poetry Prompt is: Today, we challenge you to try this out yourself by writing a list poem in which all the items are made-up names. If band names don’t inspire, how about a list of titles for romantic novels?

M&M’s, Hubba-Bubba Gum, Gummy Bears, and Sour Patch kids,

Reese’s Pieces Peanut-Butter Cups, devoured with Junior Mints.

KitKat bars, ‘Oh Henry bars, Bubble-Gum tape, and sugar-filled Pixie Sticks,

Aero, Fuzzy Peaches, Pop Rocks, and Sour Worms, all eaten.

You might prefer Jelly Worms, while I suck on Sour Soothers,

While I lick my fingers after Sour Skittles and Smarties.

Peanut M&M’s, Snickers, Mar’s Bars, Mr. Big’s —

I like only the first and the last.

Three Musketeers, Slurpies from 7-11, Trident gum in coffee or pineapple,

Lick-A-Maid, Red Liquorice, Werther’s originals, Cow Pies, and I’ve tried them all.

Gummy Frogs, Raspberry Gummies, Lemon Drops, Chocolate Rosettes, and RootBeer Candy Sticks.

Mint Melties, Peppermint Patties, Sea Shell Chocolates, Macaroons, and Hershey’s Dark- Almond,

Lays’ Barbecue-Chips, Hostess Dill-Pickle chips too.

Many treats, each and every one I’ve tried.

I once ate them atop this towering building,

As the sunset with cascading rainbow clouds flashed — as I ate from my stash.

But, that was years ago,

Today I know, I must wisely choose,

Only the finest will I devour — or my youthful body will ’round.’

Puffs of breathe,

Frosted air.

Words un-melting;

Lies freeze tongues.

Intrepid fibber;

Eyes dart East,

Then, West.

Towards lunar orb,

Free to wax and wane.

Your escape — impossible.

Wrappers, boxes —

Unconcealed.

Sweet eyes crinkle,

Mirth, laughter.

Gooey caramel,

Caresses tongues.

Chocolate dissolves,

Ice-cream compels,

Chaste-less addiction.

Allison arrived at the local coffee shop for her morning tea. Her duchshund, Peppy, trotted beside her. His ears stood alert as he waited for his morning treat. The coffee shop was also an independant tea shop. There were black teas, fruit teas, herbal teas, white teas, green teas, and all kinds of delicious tea blends. 

When Allison asked the barista for a mango green tea, Trisha sighed. “Sorry, Allison. We’ve had to cut back on teas we serve. We only serve three unique kinds each day. Too much competition with David’s Tea.” 

“Okay, what should I try?” 

“How about the pineapple, squash, and blueberry fruit tea.” 

“Not a fan of that mix, Trisha.” 

“How about chocolate and marshmallow with asparagus?”

Allison closed her eyes for a moment. “Any Irish Breakfast tea with a twist of lemon? Or green tea with papaya?” 

Trisha shook her head. “No, our tea selections are three exclusive flavors each day.” 

Allison rubbed her eyes. “I’ll have a medium latte.” 

“You don’t drink lattes,” 

“Today I do.” 

Trisha bent to give Peppy his treat. While Allison sat down, reading the paper and sipping her latte. 

Then she felt as if she was going to throw up, spitting a mouthful of latte into her napkin. 

Even the lattes had become exclusive. This one tasted like dirt.

Ivory lace and pearl ribbon, pretty shoes I love, 

Flower of delicate lace on folded silk peep toes;

Jewels, silken straps, elegant wedge most beloved. 

Black lace, four-inch gold heels, length of legs to behold, 

Fluffiest white bed, a blue corsette, soles bright pink, 

Flower of delicate lace on folded silk peep toes. 

Burgundy patent red heels with red wine, wink! 

Malbec sliding down your throat, cheese, bread, chocolate!

Glorious silver sparkling shimmer mocking,

How to make it through the day;

Soda or powder to rise.

Bakings a pastime,

In the kitchen with great-grandma,

Then with my grandma.

Later baking confections,

With my Mom and her methods.

One starts to know what,

Each person loves best,

Correctly; knowing —

Small portions grow bigger; the —

Scent of cinnamon inhaled.

On some occasions,

A person needs to bake sweet cookies.

Decadent brownies,

During the holidays with,

Rich chocolate icing too.

Baking has taught me,

Life’s no slice of mouth-watering —

Chocolate cake, but there —

Are times when a recipe,

Is what gets you through.

Endorphins, sugar,

A wretched day can be healed.

There’s a tomorrow,

Chocolate means it’s looking up,

One more day you can get through.

I have a great deal of trouble staying straight up grounded,

If you got to know me, you’d see at times I feel confounding.

I don’t understand it myself,

But imagination is wealth.

So I know it’s okay to fly,

Up into the grayish sky.

Because I know how to make black and white turn colorful,

I can make a life of gray tones light so wonderfully.

It’s not that I’m anything unusual, different,

Then anybody else or even those who write proficiently.

But anyone who inks the page,

Knows what writers create engaged,

It’s exciting, magical,

Uplifting, and illogical.

The writer illustrates, cuts, folds, does the restitching —

Of stories; ripping out seams until what is left enriches.

It’s not easy to comprehend the scribbles and —

You find delicious cake baked, chocolate rich and grand,

Icing so sweet, flavor melding,

A creation vivid felt.

Picture perfect, read with pride,

And more delightfulness resides,

Hidden inside these golden words so captivating,

Intoxicating, ethereal, rising enraptured.

Perhaps it’s not clear, why I let a balloon carry me floating,

It’s just, I’m seduced by language, writing, hopeful words wrote.

So protecting myself from —

Life’s elements thrumming,

Inside me, around me — I’m safe,

Despite trolls, odd notes of hatred.

I keep honing my craft, in my prettiest flats,

My comfortable wool coat; the writing it lifts me enwrapped.

I let the fates lead me where the wind blows me, knowing,

I could be entrenched in editing woes, left moaning.

But I keep going with my muse,

Taking all of her abuses.

‘Cause they teach me burying —

My secrets, is so worrying.

My inspirations keep the balloon drifting, rising,

I have a great deal of trouble, but my writing makes me smile, surviving.

Sweet dark chocolate slides across my tongue, the richness of chocolate icing soft and creamy; the moist cake, competing for flavour with the icing. It’s sweetness allows one to eat it slowly. Too much cake at once would ruin the experience and leave me with an upset stomach. But each bite savoured with pleasure and a bit of vanilla ice cream, ensures my scrumptious chocolate cake is a heavenly experience. 

Across the table you wink, you knew it was my favourite cake and you ordered it for me. Our eyes hold as you eat your own cake and I absorb every ounce of chocolate flavour in mine; eating cake becomes seduction.

Though times they change and we move on in life, 

We cannot say at Christmas, we’re not blessed. 

Food to eat, fine company, we confess —

To much chocolate, many sweets, little strife; 

Compared to the state of many a place ripe, 

With destruction, death, such hate which festers. 

To much is wrong, but be at peace nonetheless. 

His time draws near, have cheer; lasting hurt wiped.

Peace on earth, goodwill to all mankind, let’s —

Be kind to our neighbours and remember to share, 

Life is tough, let no one be in despair. 

Let us share the good news, for He is born set —

Healing broken hearts and pains of the past bled, 

Great physician who taught, love each other, care.
