seems like it requires you to allow php.ini to accept large file imports for sites with tons of comments.
having similar issues with 2.8.4 and the import (deacivated plugin for now) @giannii, I will email if the php.ini doesn’t solve it.

mtaunk, strip the trailing comma on the last category and you’re gold.
superann… now we know where you got the name. Doing this across themes is the way to go.
I found that when i disable my ancient “sticky” posts plugins it cleared up everything.
