Have you tried deactivating and reactivating them?
That is not HTML you are seeing, I think it is an error, WP is trying to do something and it can’t.

Also, under discussions, be sure to close comments on articles over ** days old, that helps.
And make sure to also turn off trackbacks.

Thanks for this, I have to turn it off because without the styling, it is stretching my comments out across the sidebar, which kind of sucks.
