I also deduced that this plugin was the cause of excessively high CPU usage. On Google Cloud Platform, where I host my sites, the date of the jump in usage coincided with this plugin’s installation date. I just removed the plugin and will monitor the usage to see if it decreases. Given the information gleaned in this thread, if I were a betting-woman I would wager that it will return to pre-installation levels of CPU usage.

Steps I’m taking to correct this (but I’m still awaiting verification which could take a few days, according to Google):
1. Login to admin example.com/wp-login.php
2. Settings, XML-Sitemap, Basic Options
uncheck include sitemap in HTML format.
Save or update.
3. Go to Google Search Console,Index,Coverage,validate fix.
