I had the exact same problems. It seems that going back to version 1.6.9 resolves the issue until they come out with an improved version.
I am still getting this error and was hoping to get some guidance on how to resolve. I would like to see the sent emails.

Any update on this? I have changed my PHP script timeout to 600 seconds but still see issues around 300 seconds. Shouldn’t take that long to send 1100 email, but it does.
