Similar issue:
error message appears… run the test email and the error message disappears and i receive the email
Log out of admin and back in and the error is there… sometimes.
We use gravity forms.
From email in forms is set to {admin_email} or email email address other than configured in WP Mail SMTP but force from is checked.

authentication off
want it working properly before hardening the above.
