I deactivated all other plugins and it fixed the issue. But I reactivated the plugins one by one and the problem did not come back.

Yes, it does, but this seems to be happening for some EDD links after a while they have been uploaded. By the way, the ones that are not opened are all pdf files.

Thank you for your reply.
The reason why my thumbnails did not show up was that two scripts were minified automatically; jquery-core and another relating to lazy load of images.
