Hi @audunbk,
I understand you’d like to translate attribute names such as “Color” into Norwegian (“Farge”) so they appear correctly on your store. That’s a good idea to maintain consistency and clarity for your customers.
The attribute names (like “Color” or “Size”) aren’t included in WooCommerce’s language files, so they won’t appear in Loco Translate. These are custom taxonomy names stored in your database and can be changed directly in WooCommerce.
Here’s what you can do:
- Rename the attribute manually Go to Products → Attributes, hover over “Color,” click Edit, and rename it to “Farge.” This updates the display name everywhere on your site where that attribute is used, such as product pages and filters.
- If your site is multilingual and uses WPML WPML supports WooCommerce attribute and variation translations. You can follow this guide for step-by-step instructions: https://wpml.org/documentation/related-projects/woocommerce-multilingual/translate-attributes-and-variations/
If your site is single-language, manually renaming the attribute is enough. Let us know if you’re using WPML or a different translation setup so we can guide you more precisely. Feel free to let us know how it goes.
Thanks for your kind help! My site is multiligual and I use Loco Translate, Polylang and Polylang for WooCommerce. Polylang for WooCommerce can translate the attribute terms, but not the attribute names.
Hi @audunbk,
I appreciate you sharing those details, and it’s great that you already have Polylang for WooCommerce handling the attribute terms. I understand you’d like the attribute names themselves (like “Color”) to also be translatable, not just the terms.
At the moment, Polylang for WooCommerce doesn’t provide full translation support for attribute names — only for attribute terms. That’s a known limitation, as these attribute taxonomies are stored differently and aren’t registered as translatable strings by Polylang.
Since the plugin hasn’t been updated for quite some time and lacks active compatibility maintenance, we recommend using WPML with WooCommerce Multilingual for full attribute and variation translation coverage. It includes tools specifically designed for translating both names and terms. You can review the guide here: https://wpml.org/documentation/related-projects/woocommerce-multilingual/
If you prefer staying with Polylang, the only workaround would be to manually rename the attribute labels in Products → Attributes, setting each language version separately (for example, “Farge” on your Norwegian site view).
Please let us know how it goes.
