square thumbnails
-
In Next Gen I was able to crop the thumbs in a square format or any format I wanted to, and see al the thumbs together on one page with all the information and tags.
What happened…This worked just fine.

Similar issue here. My thumbnails are 80×100 and now I can’t create custom thumbnails in the correct dimensions. The “select crop area for thumbnail” dimensions are defaulted to a landscape setting.
I just checked, and I’m experiencing the same issue. All my thumbnails default to a landscape 80×10 size, whereas before this last update the thumbnail would reflect my image orientation.

Hi @hoebee , @redtravelmaster , @thedrewseum ,
Sorry for the delayed reply.
You can set square images for your galleries using the new NextGEN Gallery UI. Here’s how:
- Go to “Imagely > Galleries” and select your gallery.
- Navigate to the “Customize” tab.
- Toggle ON the “Override thumbnails settings”
- Set square thumbnail dimensions, like 100×100, and toggle ON “Thumbnail Crop“
- Clear your image cache by going to “Imagely > Settings > Reset Options > Clear Image Cache”. Also, clear any other site cache you may use.
- Revisit the gallery page to check if the images are now square.
I hope this helps!
Best regards,
MihaiUnfortunately I just went through all the steps exactly as laid out above. My custom thumbnail cropper is still in a landscape ratio when it should be portrait (80×100).
Hi @thedrewseum,
Thank you for getting back to us.
Could you let me know if you’re using an Apple device and the original size of the images you uploaded? It’s possible that the images are smaller than what’s needed for Retina display, which might cause the original images to show instead so the crop doesn’t get applied.
Thanks again for your patience,
Best regards,

Hi there,
This is all being done on a PC and all photos are plenty large enough. It was never a problem at all in the old NextGen. It’s literally an issue the thumbnail crop selector being set to landscape instead of portrait in ALL of my thousands of galleries.
Here’s a link to an example page where we have a newly made gallery: https://thedrewseum.com/podcast/episodes/hdyd124/
Thank your for still pursuing this, it’s very frustrating not being able to choose my own thumbnails in all of my galleries made since the big update.
Hey @thedrewseum,
I’m sorry to hear about the ongoing issue, but unfortunately, we haven’t been able to replicate it on our end. For example, on this site, I was able to set square 100×100 thumbnails for the gallery, and they were applied correctly, as seen in this screenshot.
Could you please double-check to see if the square resolution settings are saved properly for your gallery? I noticed that your thumbnails are currently at an 80×100 resolution.
Thanks for your cooperation!
Best regards,
Hi Mihai,
The issue isn’t that my thumbnails aren’t the correct dimensions (they are 80×100 which is what I want). The problem is that I cannot chose a custom thumbnail – therefore some of my thumbnails are cropped weirdly (faces cut off, empty space, etc). Here’s an example.
I used to be able to select my own custom thumbnails, but as mentioned above when I try that now, the cropper ratio is wrong and therefore my changes do not apply. See here for a screenshot. The cropper should be set to 80×100 PORTRAIT so that I can choose what portion of the image is used for the thumbnail.
Thanks!
