It is generally understood that the maximum length the SEO Title should be, to guarantee it is shown in its entirety by Google, is 55 characters.

However, I use Yoast on all of my websites, which allows me to key much more than 55 characters into the SEO Title before giving me a warning that it is too long.

This is fine, however, there doesn’t appear to be a fixed length that the SEO Tile can be in Yoast BEFORE it gives you a warning. ie, I have one page where the SEO Title is 76 characters in length and if I try to increase this this by 1 character, Yoast gives me a warning, however, I have another page that has an SEO Title of 73 characters but when I try to key a 74th character, Yoast gives me a warning!

Can anybody shed any light on this?

Google doesn’t count a particular number of characters but has a fixed width in which it can show the title. This means it could show many more i’s than it could show w’s. The snippet preview in Yoast SEO accounts for this and shows you the same thing Google would show.
