Meta Box is a library/framework to work with custom fields. While it serves end-users, the original target is developers. As a library, it can be used within other plugins and themes, so you don’t have to write the same code again and again.
We write our philosophy in our docs which explains this. I think it would be helpful to understand the purpose of the plugin.

This is no longer the case. We’ve just released Meta Box Lite, a free UI version of Meta Box, which combines Meta Box, Meta Box Builder and all free extensions that let you build custom post types, custom taxonomies, custom fields, relationships for free.
