Multisite migration
-
I have a small multi-site (sub-folders) website with 2 languages, English in the site root and French in a “fr” sub-folder. Everything uses one database. I’m wondering if UpdraftMigrator Premium will be able to migrate the testing (staging) version of the site that’s in a subdomain to the live version location which is in the main domain : same server, 2 locations, 2 different databases — website.com / stg.website.com ?
Thank you.

Hi,
You would need the multisite addon as well the migrator to migrate the site.
However, moving a sub site to a main site is quite complicated and you will not be able to do this with UpdraftPlus.
Thank you for the prompt reply š
I’m already manually moving the sub-site staging to the live site successfully by editing the database (a simple db name change and a search and replace that removes “stg.”) and restoring its contents to the live site’s database and then replacing the live site wp-contents folders the “stg.” sub-domain ones. It’s not that complicated … but requires I be VERY careful when following my recipe.
I’m surprised that I’m NOT able to do this with UpdraftPlus. Or are you saying that I can do it using UpdraftPlus + UpdraftMigrator Premium + the multisite addon.
What is the “multisite addon”? Is there a subscription fee for that too?
The multisite add-on is to backup and migrate multisite (the free version of UprdraftPlus does not support multisites.
Both the migrator and the multisite addon are included in Premium (they can also be purchased separately)
UpdraftPlus does not currently allow you to change subs site to the main site (or the other way around). You can of course migrate the content across but the URL of the main site will stay the same.
Just to be clear. I have one multi-site WP install currently installed in a sub-domain (one website, 2 languages) and want to migrate it to the main domain. I’m really surprised UpdraftPlus software (even with paid add-ons) cannot do this as I thought that’s exactly what they’re selling??
I’ll go back to Googling “Move a WordPress site from a subdomain to root” to find a plugin that can do this. I’m seeing many migration plugin recommendations.
You cannot use UpdraftPlus to change a subsite to the main site.
I’m not asking about changing a subsite to a main site.
You yourself wrote: “You can of course migrate the content across but the URL of the main site will stay the same.“
THAT is EXACTLY what I’m asking about except the UpdraftPlus plugin displays a warning suggesting I need something additional to do this with a multi-site installation.
“UpdraftPlus warning: WordPress Multisite is supported, with extra features, by UpdraftPlus Premium. Without upgrading, UpdraftPlus allows every blog admin who can modify plugin settings to backup (and hence access the data, ā¦.”
I only started using WordPress 3 months ago so I’m sorry if I’m not understanding what the free plugin can already do (if I’m the only site admin) and not asking my questions very well.
I have another small site with a live version in the site root and a staging version in its subdomain. I was finished needing the subdomain version so as a test I backed up the live site using UpdraftPlus, copied the backups to the staging site in the UpdraftPlus folder, chose to restore what I uploaded and was asked if I wanted to migrate then it updated the database.
It worked perfectly and now the staging site has (appears to have) the same content as the live site.
When I get a chance I’ll try the same with the multi-site where I also won’t care too much if I mess up migrating it to the staging subdomain. We’ll see if it works as well.
Like I said … I’m very new to WordPress and learning how the UpdraftPlus works.
Hi,
With UpdraftPlus, you can do the following
- migrate a single site into a subsite
- migrate the entire multisite
- convert a multisite to one site
- backup the whole multisite (you cannot backup individual subsite)
- You can restore a sub site if it’s within it’s own network
Unfortunately, UpdraftPlus does not sounds like is going to be suitable for your particular task.
As all I want to do is migrate the entire multisite then it appears I can indeed do what I want with it. I suspect my question was not clear. Or perhaps you did not read my question properly….
Anyway … thank you for confirming UpdraftPlus can do EXACTLY what I need which is “migrate the entire multisite“.
Apologies, I think I misunderstood what you were asking. You can migrate the entire multisite with Premium or the addons.
Now I’m misunderstanding you …
Are you now saying that I need to buy both the Network-Multisite AND UpdraftMigrator Premium plugins to be able to backup and restore (or migrate) a multisite WP installation?
You earlier wrote :
“With UpdraftPlus, you can do the following
- migrate the entire multisite“
Now it sounds like I need to buy 2 plugins to do that…
Never mind. It worked fine without any added plugin(s).
I backed up the Live site and copied the backup Zip files and database file
to the Staging site’s updraft folder. I then restored those Live site backups
to the Staging site. I accepted to have the links corrected/updated and it all worked fine, no additional plugin(s) were needed.I’m new to using WordpPress (though I’ve been designing and managing
html/css websites for more than 20 years). “Migration” was probably the
wrong word to use.I wanted to know if UpdraftPlus could create a backup of a Live multi-site
(sub-folder) WP installation and use that backup to replace an existing
Staging version installed in a subdomain of the same domain on the same
host and shares the same database server, each with a different database.I now see that it CAN. Sorry for any confusion.
