Modify query arguments

    The query in this snippet shows items from the same category in a WPBakery (formerly Visual Composer) post grid module added to portfolio posts.

    I need it to show items from the same category of the current post (normal post, not portfolio post) in a post grid module added to the sidebar.

    While this specific snippet is for the Total theme, the query tweak is independent of the theme, so this question is of common interest for the community.

    How do I modify the query to suit my needs?
