You need to enable that option, probably previous theme was handling it automatically. Edit the post/page with images, then select an image and click on Link icon, then select “Enlarge on Click” – https://prnt.sc/9J74BAq9xRu5

Thank you for the tip, but I have 2 problems.
1) I have over 5,000 published posts with images of this type. It is not feasible to change the setting in all of them. Do you know if there is any way to change them in bulk?
2) I changed it as you suggested in one post. Some photos were cropped on the page because they are horizontal photos next to horizontal photos. When I click to enlarge, these photos should appear whole (horizontal), but only the cropped photos show up.

The thing is that News Magazine X theme does not change any default WordPress settings so it is ho it works by default, that’s not a theme related issues.
You may try plugins like this one https://wordpress.org/plugins/gallery-block-lightbox/ to apply global Lightbox (popup) to the images on your website.

The plugin worked very well and solved the problem. Thank you very much.
One question: on pages with multiple galleries, the plugin opens the sequence of photos in one gallery, but doesn’t automatically move to the next. We need to close it and open the next one.
Do you know if this can be adjusted in the plugin?
