Why would you want to exclude a post?
I get the use case around pages, but can you provide a few examples where you’d want to exclude the post?
Good question!
There’s a page appearing in my sitemap that I’d like to exclude. This particular page wouldn’t remove itself from the sitemap when I tried to exclude it via Settings > XML Sitemaps > Exclude Pages by entering its ID. I figured that this ‘page’ must actually be a post.
Now, after some deeper investigation, I’ve realised it is in fact a page after all. I think the reason this particular page isn’t excluded from the sitemap is because it is the page I have set as the ‘posts page’ via Settings > Reading > Front page displays > (select “A static page”) > Posts page.
A screenshot might explain it better:

Whichever page I set as the ‘Posts page’ doesn’t get excluded from the sitemap.
Hope that explanation wasn’t too long-winded 🙂
I have fixed that. Sort of an anomaly. Now if the page id is excluded and it is used for the blog it will not be listed provided that it is a secondary page and not used as the homepage. (we still would want domain.com/ to index)
