It’s a problem that surfaces only when the WP Retina 2x plugin is active. I’ll get a fix out soon.

Now I am getting this:
EWWW Image Optimizer uses jpegtran, optipng, pngout, pngquant, gifsicle, and cwebp. You are missing: optipng, gifsicle. Please install via the Settings Page or the Installation Instructions.
Did you use the WordPress uploader, or use FTP to install the new version? If you used FTP, you have to put it into BIN (binary) mode, or it corrupts the binaries.

FTP, I do not know anything about BIN (binary) mode.
then use the WP uploader or wait for 2.9.8

I deleted and reinstalled using WordPress installer.
Everything is working now, thank you again.
FYI, that’s because I reverted the stable tag to 2.9.6 until I could sort out another bug. The error your reported, and the other bugfix will be released in 2.9.8 tomorrow unless something crazy happens.
