is there a way to add an exit button to get out of the viewer? Right now when anyone opens viewer it takes a page refresh to close it

Yes, there is already a close button located in the top right corner of the viewer Please check screenshot https://tinyurl.com/yvqtgl8u

If you don’t see the exit button, it may be because you’re an admin. Try private browsing 🙂
