I have decided to post my own topic here because of so many varying answers.

First time I’ve had to do this.

I would like to update to a new theme and totally delete all of the old theme files and start over so when I install the new theme, I won’t get any old pages or plugins or CSS incorporated into the new theme. I know WordPress will try to incorporate any old pages, plugins or anything old into the new theme you are installing. I don’t want this.

How do I completely clean house before installing a new theme so I don’t get any unwanted old content incorporated into the new theme? What files do I delete and in what folders do I start cleaning house?

I do know that I need to deactivate the old theme then reactivate a different theme first. Then, go back and click delete on the lower right corner on the old theme details page. I also know that I need to deactivate and delete ALL existing plugins from the site, the go back and reinstall the plugins after installing the new theme, I’ve been told.

    Then what do I do?

Should I delete ALL old css style sheets too?

Where do I start deleting old pages? Do I need to ftp in and start deleting all contents from the wp-content folder? Do I leave all folders in tact but just clean all the folders out?

Should I clean out other folders too? Should I clean out the wp-includes and wp-admin folders too? Do I delete the whole folder or just clean the folder out?

Thanks in advance for any detailed instructions on how to go about doing this correctly! Most posts are vague and very differing on this subject.

Sorry for long post, just wanted to explain in detail.

    Thanks!

    Kevin

  • A theme is how your website looks and behaves.

Web Pages are saved in Database. Whatever theme you use. They will be displayed.

If you want to start fresh and delete all the previous data. You have to delete all the tables in the MySQL database and setup WordPress again.

    Thanks rvwebstudio!

Too new at this. Not sure how to delete tables in my MySQL database.

Right now, I’m trying to find out how to completely uninstall WP from my server and reinstall WordPress. I know that in itself will clean house.

    Thanks again.

But only after making a FULL backup of everything (theme files, uploaded files, database etc) first. Just in case you want anything.

There is a plugin called WordPress Reset that can wipe the WordPress database for you.

Or you could leave it be, and set up a new install of WordPress instead. Which would be how I’d do it.

    Thanks.

I want to start clean. I don’t want to back up anything.

Hostica.com is the host for this site. Trying to find out how to completely uninstall WP from this server then I’ll re-install WP but they don’t even have a c-panel, they have Softaculous App Installer. arrggg!

    Thanks.

    According to this video
    https://www.hostica.com/support/Knowledgebase/Article/View/188/0/video-managing-a-mysql-database-w-phpmyadmin
Hostica has a control panel, with access to MySQL databases. Although that page was apparently written back in 2006 so who knows?

If they don’t give you any way to create, delete and edit databases, you probably ought to find another host – because as you’re finding out, sometimes you really need it.

Moving site and transferring domain to Bluehost. That will definitely wipe WP clean of everything, and that’s what I want. A fresh start.

    Hostica.com sucks!

Thanks guys for the help! Cheers!

Hi Guys – Hoping this post is still relevant. I have a Bluehost account that hosts 7 of my sites all in their own folders as separate WP installs. I need to clean one out and start over. There is a lot of custom code somebody else did, plugins, etc. I want to reset it back to the normal theme. I am assuming if I install the WordPress Reset plugin into that site and run it, it wont affect any except the site where the plugin is installed? Right? Sorry, just a little paranoid of impacting other sites, logins, access, etc.

    Thanks

Send your URL’s so I can take a look. How many installs of WP do you have?

Call Bluehost, they will Help. Get a good Tech that has done WP troubleshooting. Not just some tech reading from a script…..

You should be able to delete/uninstall WP from one folder/site and start clean. I’ve never done this. If you still want the pages/posts images, settings for this site, tell them to keep that part intact if they can and save the content in a folder-in the old theme folder, I think. Not too sure about the Plugin Reset….

Tell Bluehost not touch any of your WP installs for your other sites…

Let me know how this goes?, I’m sure I’ll run in to this scenario one day :-0
