If you are seeing question marks it means that the PHP MB String extension is not installed on your server or that the font you use doesn’t support Cyrillic characters (the Open Sans font used in the Simple template does). You can check if MB String is installed by going to the Status tab on the PDF Invoice settings page. MB String is a very common extension, just ask your host if they can enable it for you.

I solved the problem using the Open Sans font, but if I wanted to use Helvetica, what should I do?

Then you have to use a TTF version of Helvetica that has the extended character set (there are a lot of Helvetica versions out there…)
