Customizing the visual editor?

Is there any hack or plugin that lets me pre-define text styles in the visual editor?

As the site builder, I’d like to prepare some bespoke styles so that once I handover the site to the content manager, it will be very clear how to reproduce certain text styles: simply choose from the styles already there in the drop-down menu. These custom styles would have descriptive nicknames that make sense in the context of this project. For example, in a site that does tables of contents for magazines, instead of “Heading 1”, “Heading 2”, and “Heading 3”, the content manager would simply choose “Author Name”, “Article Title”, “Slug”.
