I updated my sites a little over a week ago and today have discovered my Custom Post Types have disappeared from the WordPress Dashboard. On one site, I was able to import the post types into ACF using their wizard… on this site, that doesn’t work. I don’t even know what the exact name of the missing custom post type was; I thought I’d try to re-add it and see if that worked… how can I find this info?

The CPT is still working apparently, as it’s so the site users can add hero blocks and the hero blocks are on the main page… there’s the main hero block and the two blocks to the right and the data is still loading into those loops. But I just can’t see the custom posts to edit them.

I’m using Elementor Pro – the ACF plugin is for the custom fields.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Do you still have your settings shown when visiting the CPTUI “add/edit” menus? Or the CPTUI > Tools menu item with the two textareas? Or are all of those empty?

No, the post type has totally disappeared and nothing shows in the Add/Edit post types tab or in the Tools tab. The taxonomies appear to remain intact.

I’ve managed to load a month old backup into a staging environment with an older version of wordpress and all the plugins; the Post Type is still there (it’s called “Heroes” btw). Can I go into the Tools section of that site and export the info and re-import it into the current site?

There would be three posts in this post type: they are called Hero 01, Hero 02, Hero 03. Not sure where these posts have gone – or if they’re just floating in an database ether at this point waiting to emerge? If they’re gone I should be able to recreate them fairly easily.

Yes. I doubt the post type/taxonomy settings have changed much in a month, so you’d be fine with using those settings. The content sounds like it’s all still in the database, so nothing to recover there. Just a matter of getting them properly re-registered so that the admin UI can come back.

hi Michael – just thought I’d give you an update on this one. I was able to import the post types no problem, but the post themselves did not appear. Ultimately I had to recreate a new set of custom fields for the post type and recreate the loop layouts – strange bug! Either it was WordPress update or the big PHP update we just did. Or possibly a gremlin logged in and deleted the post types?

Thank you for your excellent responses and a great plugin. It’s really appreciated.

Unsure on the rest of that and why they didn’t re-appear unless somehow registered slugs didn’t end up matching up. I’m curious what all data may or may not still be in the database via direct access/review.

@contentcreative did you ever figure out what happened?
