WordPress Popular Posts is fundamentally broken for cached sites. It defeats the entire purpose of Nginx/WP Rocket caching. There you spend all your energy optimizing to reduce every imaginable PHP FPM invocation, let alone the absurd DB query cascade of WP, and then this plugin comes and fires a XHR to the backend to load content that could have and should have come prerendered through the main page request.

    Hey @xtrabytes,

    That’s not factually correct.

While it is true that WPP by default loads your popular posts list via AJAX, it does offer a toggle to turn it off if you don’t need the feature (see WP Dashboard > WP Popular Posts > Tools, under the Data section.)

The reason WPP loads posts via AJAX by default, for anyone reading this, is that most people expect their popular posts list to update in real time – which is not really possible for sites using some sort of page caching solution – like WP Rocket for example (and there’s even a FAQ about this.)
