Jetpack current renders my site inoperable and WordPress reports “There has been a critical error on your website”.

The logs tell me that require_once failed to open stream when looking for class.jetpack.php. The error occurs in wp-content/plugins/jetpack/load-jetpack.php on line 41. Inspection of the jetpack directory confirms that no file by the name class.jetpack.php exists. Deleting the jetpack directory allows WordPress to load normally.

The critical error does not appear immediately after installing Jetpack. Everything seems fine for some time. But I had to delete Jetpack yesterday to regain access to the site. I reinstalled and things seemed fine at first, but overnight the problem recurred.

    Wordpress Version 5.5
    Jetpack Version: 8.8.2
    PHP Version: 7.0.33
    Web host: Bluehost (shared host)

    Hi there,

This sounds like the same issue we’re tracking in the thread at https://wordpress.org/support/topic/e_compile_error-was-caused-in-line-41/

Please subscribe to that thread for updates – you can just click the Subscribe link in that thread, no need to comment.

For now, I’m afraid deactivating Jetpack is the only workround while we work with Bluehost to find the cause.

Thank you, that does appear to be discussing the same problem. Subscribed!

    I have good news!

Bluehost found out which of their internal scans was removing the file, and fixed it. The problem should now be solved.

You should be able to re-install Jetpack now, the file should not get removed again.

Note: If you had only deactivated Jetpack via WordPress’ recovery mode, you’ll want to delete the plugin, and then re-install it from scratch.

If you still experience issues with a fresh installation of Jetpack, let us know!
