Carousel: commenting error, render bug
-
Wow, that is incredibly weird.
Do you see the same problem under the Twenty Nineteen theme?
If you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.
Thanks for your reply, James.
I’ve checked on another site in the meantime (my wife’s), which is using an entirely different theme, and the problem is the same – this leads me to believe that it’s not a theme, but a Jetpack/Carousel issue:

I let that Health Check run on my site nevertheless but it didn’t reveal anything that would require attention in my hosting environment (SiteGround).
Alex.
Hello,
I have a new WordPress installation and I can confirm that I am also experiencing the same issues with the Jetpack Carousel. In addition, captions do not appear and descriptions are extremely difficult to read due to the lack of an opaque background behind the text.
Google Chrome’s Console reveals the following errors at the following page: http://cryologger.org/wp/gallery/#jp-carousel-181
GET http://cryologger.org/wp/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=get_attachment_comments&nonce=7accceb363&id=181&offset=0 400 (Bad Request)

AdamThat’s very odd, I’m not running into this problem on my own site and tests sites, which are all running the Twenty Nineteen theme.
Would you please try the Health Check plugin’s Troubleshooting Mode again to also rule-out the other plugins?
Hello James, I did that. Health Check, Troubleshooting Mode, 2019 Theme, only enabled plugin is Jetpack (obviously). Same result.

Alex.Hi James,
I’m afraid I had the same result. Aside from Jetpack, the only other plugins I had on this new installation were Akismet Anti-Spam and Contact Form 7, which I disabled.
Captions aren’t showing up in any of the other default themes and the description still seems to be floating awkwardly above the page in the background.
Screenshot:
https://i.imgur.com/mjG8hmS.pngPHP is 5.6.39 while Health Check recommends 7.2+. Could that be at all to blame?
Thanks for looking into this for us!
Cheers,
AdamI’m on PHP 7.1 which is “current and recommended” by my hoster (SiteGround).
Ah yeah, I can see it on my own site with a smaller window, fun! 🙂
I did some digging, it looks like we have an open bug for the 400 in the console: https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/issues/11148
Based on exactly what this is affecting, it should be the core of the issue.
Sorry for the trouble!
Thanks for the update, James. Hoping it’ll get fixed soon. 🙂
We found the overall cause for the bug, and it will be fixed in the next update: https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/pull/11195
Great news, James!
Glad we were able to help!

Hello,
I’m having problems with Carousel:
1. trying to leave a comment in slideshow view results in an error message, displayed in red: “An error has occured. Please try again later.” – commenting on the site works otherwise (including commenting on “attachments”)
2. when scrolling down to reveal the comment box, the “underlying” blog post appears behind the comment boxes.
I tried this with Firefox, Opera (Chromium) and Internet Explorer, and the result is the same in all three browsers.
Here’s an example URL: https://www.alex-kunz.com/signs-of-life-1-2019/#jp-carousel-22046
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Alexander.
