We’ll have someone kick the DB for you.
Thanks Mike! We appreciate all of your super hard work and your WordPress and personal blog posts (we tweet them out on @maxfoundry)
BTW, We’ve had trouble understanding how your Active Installs stat works. It is updated monthly for smaller plugins? Does it use a 30 or 60 day average?
Thanks,
Bob
Fixed the link.
And the active installs count is updated daily. It’s simply a current count, not a count over some time period.
Thanks Sam, very helpful.
So the reason downloads and active installs don’t match up is because people download and don’t install or activate? That about right.
We’ve had 4,000 downloads on one of our plugins in the last week but the install number is still around 800 where it’s been for the past two weeks. It’s 4.4 stars and well liked.
Active Installs is the number of currently active installations of the plugin. Seems pretty obvious, given the name.
Downloads is not a useful metric. If I have 100 installs and I update the plugin to 1.1 and they all download the update, then that’s another 100 downloads. Useless information.
thanks otto.
if i have 800 installs and i update and get 4000 downloads then something else is going on between the process of downloading and showing up as an active install. that could be deinstalls of prior activations or non activated downloads
got it. very helpful. we’ve never put much stock in downloads to be honest. we’re focused on active installs.

“Active” installs. The plugin has to be installed and activated to count. A plugin that is installed but not active doesn’t add to that. So, perhaps you have something like 2-3k installs which people have but are not using? Or people download, try it out, and then try something else. That happens a lot too.
Again, super helpful in understanding all of this Sam. I think about it a lot in terms of how important it is to get our description page and the other parts of our profile just right so that more folks can get up and running.
Last month we made the user interfaces of our products more accessible for less technical users. We already see the benefit of this in our ratings and feedback.
Mika, the post on tags was very helpful yesterday. Thanks.
