Api Example not working

I have tried the code on https://gist.github.com/ajaydsouza/c8defd4b46e53240e376#file-tptn-api-examples-php withing a templete for a page and if I do not put a ?> at the end i get an error but when i do add the ?> at the end the page is blank with the exception of my header and footer. Is there something that I am missing?
