Unfortunately, it would be impossible to replace the Magnific Popup library with Photoswipe due to backward compatibility.
As for the background images, could you please provide a screenshot of what you’re looking for?

Please consider adding Photoswipe as an alternative lightbox. It’s so much better than Magnific Popup. Even the author of both scripts recommends Photoswipe nowadays. Many thanks for your feedback. Our Expertly theme has a similar layout: https://expertlytheme.com/expertly/ and an image background can be applied via custom CSS.
I’ve added Photoswipe to our roadmap, and we’ll add this as an alternative if there’re more users requesting it.
