Hi! I am using this great plugin for many years now with great satisfaction. But setting up a new website today I get a 504 Gateway time out after one minute when updating a standard WordPress menu. Even when I did not change the menu at all and click on update the 504 appears. However, the update has been applied anyway. And while the update still runs in one browser I can see that it has finished successfully in another browser within a second… And when I deactivate Nav Menu Roles the menu updates in 2 seconds. Please help!

Hi there. There’s no reason I can think of why NMR would have suddenly started throwing that error… Nothing has changed in the plugin in some time.

Can you tell me where you are editing the menu? The nav menu screen, front end editor, customizer? I will try to give this a test later on the week.

Hi, thanks for your attention! I am editing the main WP menu via Appearance/menus and click Save menu. NMR is activated. I get the “sending request to…”message on bottom left of the screen. It stays there for a minute and then I get the message 504 Gateway Time-out The server didn’t respond in time. Even when I did not change the menu at all I get the same result. And when I look at the menu via another browser I see that the change has been applied before the time-out returns. When I deactivate NMR the update runs fine in 2 seconds.

I retested this locally and I can’t reproduce it here yet. Do you have an unusually large menu? Could your hosting provider tell you a bit more about what the 504 is getting stuck on?

Can you elaborate on what you mean by “sending request to…” on the bottom of the screen? When I edit the menu at wp-admin/nav-menus.php there’s a full page reload. If you are comfortable using your browser’s developer console, are you able to send me a screenshot of the request?

My menu has 80 options divided over 4 levels. The idea is to create a “one stop shopping” navigation position from where you can reach all pages with just hovering and one click. I contacted my hosting provider and they asked me “if I was causing a huge lot of work on the server” but in my view that is not the case. Today I created a second menu with just 5 options and was able to update that from the standard admin appearance/menus option without a problem while NMR was active. Then I put all 80 options from the first menu into the second menu and that went fine. I suspect that the menu causing the problem might be corrupted in some way and made a full “logical” copy of it with the “duplicate menu” plugin. And updating that menu works fine. So my conclusion is that the initial menu was corrupted and I replaced it by the copy. Problem solved and case closed! Thanks for your attention and support!
