    Long story short.

I had my host change our primary domain and its caused no end of issues since.

We have since changed back to the original primary domain, because of all the issues it caused us. I lost site access for almost two weeks while they restored the site again. The site is back up and running now. However numerous things are wrong, pages are missing on the site but are showing in pages in dashboard.

From within dashboard loads of things I am clicking on takes ages to load and then loads through to a 404 error page.

If I click on ‘plugin updates’ at the top of my dashboard under ‘home’ It loads a 404 error page. But if I click on installed plugins in the plugins header my installed plugins all show as normal.

If I click on ‘new plugin’ It loads to the 404 error page.

I have the site health app installed which is showing a notification but if I click it I also get a 404 error.

I have basic knowledge on all this, but if anyone could spare me some patients I can follow guidance and work with you, I would really appreciate it.

This is really frustrating constantly hitting 404 error pages. I just want to get things back working properly and I am not asking my host anymore they seem to break more then they fix!

Any advise appreciated. I dont even know where to start anymore. someone advised on another forum to delete the .htaccess file, log back in and it restores its and hopefully resolves the issue. I did this but no change.

    Please help

    Tom

It sounds to me like the WordPress installation is incomplete. You can fix this with a manual update as described here: https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/updating-wordpress/#manual-update

    Thank you for the feedback.

I am a little apprehensive but happy to follow the guide and give it a go. This wont lose the whole site will it?. This site had lots of historical information about our club. I have been tasked with taking it over and cant risk losing it.

In following this guide this will only refresh the wordpress side of things and all pages and info will be saved on the plugins which will be reactivated afterwards.

    Do I understand this correctly.

Sorry am learning things as I go, I have some knowledge but im trying.

The instructions only describe how to re-upload the WordPress core files. No data will be changed in the process.

If you are unsure, first create a backup via your hosting provider. If you don’t know how to do this, contact your hosting provider’s support team.

This support team will also help you with the necessary FTP connection you need to copy the files.

Super, thank you for the swift and helpful reply.

I can create a back up in the hosting account, thats fine. I also have access to CPanel and the File Manager. Hopefully its as straight forward as it reads it is.

My hosting company have been beyond useless, they caused all my issues in the first place. My plan is to get things all back working properly then move our hosting to a new provider.

Is there any hurdles or stumbling blocks you can advise on that I should be aware of before I jump in?

No, I don’t think there’s anything else to consider. Everything is actually in the article.

Hi @threadi doing as advised now. Have removed the wp-includes and wp-admin files as instructed.

Am now attempting to upload the new files from the fresh wordpress download and for both I am receiving the message:

‘An error occurred. Your account may be over its quota or you attempted to upload a folder.’

This displays for both file uploads and its stuck on 0% upload. Is this a case of just being patient while the files are uploading or should I do something else to get them uploading.

    Appreciate any feed back.

This message during FTP upload comes from your host. If you have any questions, please contact their support team.

Thank you, I have done as suggested. Ha re-uploaded all the wordpress core files all seemingly looks fine. Logged into my dashboard. Click on Dashboard > Updates and it loads to the same 404 error page as it did before.

Im stumped now, any other ideas I can try please?

    Hi @afcleytonsec ,

    I hope you’re doing well.

I understand that all this happened after a domnain switch/migration.

Noting that and the fact of you receiving 404+ you already tried to replace the WP Core, I would recommend checking actually the domain when you get the 404, is it the correct one? Or does it change to a domain with a typo/different domain?

Are you getting it on a public page? If yes, could you share it?

Also, in case you see the wrong domain when getting a 404, could you create a backup and try this plugin? https://wordpress.org/plugins/better-search-replace/

You will have an option to “Run as dry run”, be sure to click it so you can do a test first:

In search for, use the wrong domain found on the 404.

On Replace with, use the correct domain.

    I hope this helps.

Wow, that really surprises me. Can you please check via FTP whether the file /wp-admin/update-core.php exists? If so, does it have the same properties as all other files in the directory?

If the answer to both questions is yes, I would ask you to delete the .htaccess file in the main directory. Don’t worry: WordPress can regenerate it for you at any time via the permalinks.

If that doesn’t help either, you’ll need to contact your host’s support team. There must be something wrong there. If they can’t help, you can move the project elsewhere. I bet it will work fine there.

Hi @wpmudevsupport3 thanks for reaching out.

The domain remains the same as it should

    On clicking dashboard it loads

    https://afcleyton.co.uk/wp-admin/ with no issues

On clicking on updates (below home) it loads

    https://afcleyton.co.uk/wp-admin/update-core.php displaying a 404 error page

If i click on add a plugin it loads

    https://afcleyton.co.uk/wp-admin/plugin-install.php displaying a 404 error page

If I click on my plugins it loads

    https://afcleyton.co.uk/wp-admin/plugins.php with no issues.

All domains are showing correct. Im so lost with this.

    Hi @afcleytonsec,

Could you please try deleting the .htaccess file as @threadi mentioned in the above response and check if that helps to resolve the issue? Please also try re-installing WordPress core and see if that makes any difference. I hope the following guide comes in handy: https://kinsta.com/blog/reinstall-wordpress/#ftp

If the issue persists, please bring this to the notice of your hosting support, as it should be more likely to be an issue at the hosting end.

    Best Regards,

Sorry @threadi appreciate you getting back to me and helping I must have missed your reply. Didnt mean to ignore you! Apologies.

So I have checked and in my File public_hmtl/afcleyton.co.uk/wp-admin/wp-admin/update-core.php It is there. Could you please confirm for me which properties within I should be comparing it too or confirming it has. I can view the file and it has a lot of info to display.

    (@threadi)

I wasn’t concerned about the contents of the file, but rather the file permissions. Are they the same as all the other files in the directory?

Thread Starter AFC Leyton Club Sec

    (@afcleytonsec)

Sorry. I have checked the file permissions. They show

READ – User (yes) / Group (yes) / World (yes)

WRITE – User (yes) / Group (no) / World (no)

EXECUTE – User (no) / Group (no) / World (no)

    Permission 6 – 4 – 4

From checking a few other files this seems to be the same across the board.
