It may not be as glorious a smackdown as Kitzmiller v. Dover was (there are very few judges as marvelously scathing as John E. Jones III was in that decision), but it's damn well good enough to celebrate.

First, the United States argues that this provision “necessarily places lawfully present aliens (and even U.S. citizens) in continual jeopardy of having to demonstrate their lawful status to non-federal officials.” The United States further asserts that there are numerous categories of lawfully-present aliens “who will not have readily available documentation to demonstrate that fact,” including foreign visitors from Visa Waiver Program countries, individuals who have applied for asylum but not yet received an adjudication, people with temporary protected status, U and T non-immigrant visa applicants, or people who have self-petitioned for relief under the Violence Against Women Act. Also, the United States points out that United States citizens are not required to carry identification, and some citizens might not have easy access to a form of identification that would satisfy the requirement of Section 2(B).

Couple this with the injunction preventing Brewer from denying domestic partnership benefits to gay couples in the name of budget cuts and it's been a distinct setback for bigotry in Arizona.

(It amuses me deeply that the judge stated you can't cut benefits for same-sex domestic partners since they can't get married and therefore retain the benefits, but you can cut benefits for opposite-sex couples because they could theoretically get married. And it's the latter category that actually makes up the vast majority of those affected. To those who claim same-sex domestic partnership/civil unions would be "separate but equal": there's a bunch of heterosexual domestic partners that would disagree with you.)

SixApart has sold LJ to a Russian company!

Damned if I know what repercussions this is going to have. But I guess the suspicions circulating during Strikethrough that 6A was gearing up for an IPO weren't that far off the mark. It was just a buyout instead.

*is still in shock*

My favourite line thus far from the manga I'm currently reading, as wailed aloud to an uncaring sky (and a thoroughly unsympathetic companion) by the main character: "WHERE DID MY PUBERTY GO?!"

Bonus: an entire extended family apparently made up of various incarnations of that ever-lovable sadist Fuji Syuusuke.

The #1 lesson I have learned from reading BL manga:

There is never, ever, EVER a medical professional in the high school infirmary. Thus, it is the primary spot for random underage gay sex.

Exception: the medical professional himself is the one engaging in random gay sex with his underage charges.

Andy Murray just beat Roger Federer in straight sets.

Don't believe me? I don't blame you. Read about it on the BBC site.

It seems Federer wasn't his usual self, but still! Maybe Andy Murray does have what it takes after all.

Or maybe it's just a fluke, like Ivanisevic's wild-card win at Wimbledon.

ETA: A summary article from the BBC. Poor Roger is a bit frustrated, but he's as polite as ever.

Tezuka sigh

The dub.

Oh god. So I just watched the PoT English dub, which is now out on http://www.toonamijetstream.com --though it's still not viewable by Firefox or Mac users.

It's...weird. The voices aren't too bad, actually, and they seem to be keeping the names intact--with the order reversed, of course. Sakuno's pretty tolerable without her girlish squeeing, and while Ryuuzaki-sensei's not quite grandmotherly enough, that may come with time. Ryoma is...okay, I guess. Nothing can compare to Minagawa-san's irritated grumble, but the new voice actor manages to do the whole "I am a cocky NY boy" pretty well.

They've redone the credits into some sort of montage of, like, every opening and ending ever, plus random episode scenes. The theme music has no words, but then, I guess they could hardly sing about tennis with a straight face.

Some of the translations are entertaining. I do not approve of the "double fault" pun, especially not when inserted into Ryoma's dialogue, of all people. "Mada mada dane" has apparently become "you've got a long way to go" which seems logical, if lacking in pithiness. And why was "dangan serve" translated as "killer serve" instead of "bullet serve" when they have the same number of syllables?

My main issue: the pronunciation. I hate that they've Americanised the pronunciation of Japanese names, e.g., saKUno instead of SAkuno. Just because most Americans don't know where to put the stress in Japanese words does not mean you get a free pass to be a dumbass. My name, which is neither English or Japanese in origin, often gives people here trouble. I cut them plenty of slack, but the one thing I cannot stand is stress on the wrong syllable. I correct them till they get it right, and it doesn't usually take more than one correction. What the hell, yo.
