Tips

Full screen and windowed mode
You can switch between windowed mode and full screen mode by pressing Alt+Enter when WolfMAME is running, or you can start WolfMAME in windowed mode directly by typing ./mame -window in the terminal. This is convenient if you’re recording your session with a screen recorder such as OBS or QuickTime. You can exit games (and quit WolfMAME itself) by pressing the Esc key.

Recording your game session
To record your game session, press the red record button when starting a game. Name your file, play, and your session will be saved as an .inp file in the “inp” folder located within your WolfMAME folder. You can then replay your session using the playback tool in the macOS terminal.

Screenshots
You can take screenshots by pressing the F12 key on your keyboard (this requires configuring your function keys as “standard function keys” in System Settings > Function Keys). Screenshots will be saved as .png files in the “snap” folder inside your WolfMAME folder.

Remapping the keys
Another tip when using MAME/WolfMAME on macOS is to remap the keys. The left Ctrl key is the default Button 1 key in most games, but this doesn’t work well with an Apple Keyboard. Use the Tab key while in-game to remap the keys. Avoid using the left Ctrl key for a better gaming experience.

Changing machine settings – dip switches
Most games have settings (dip switches) to adjust difficulty, number of lives, etc. You can access these settings by pressing Tab while in a game. The settings you make are automatically saved when you exit the menu with the Esc key.

NVRAM issues
Some games uses NVRAM which can generate errors in your inp file when recording. To prevent this you can delete the NVRAM folder (if it exists) and the create a file called “nvram” (without any file extension). Note that this is already prepared in the latest version of WolfMAME for macOS.
