Indeed, this year it burst.

Life update. Huh. Well, in general my mood has been really, really good. Though there's been a lot of loss, the largest being both of my parents in the past year-and-half. My career has pretty much hit a wall (though I'm still employed, not sure how or why); our 12-year-old greyhound is in his last days (lung cancer)...

I was going to put "my identity as a mother" in this list, but that's not quite right — my daughters essentially launched isn't a loss, but it is a huge transition. C and I have been trying to lean into the bits of life that we ignored for years — we're going to shows now, trying out new restaurants, exploring...

Media-wise, we're still watching every English-language variation of Task Master. We loved Severance. We're watching Tasting History and Scott Manly and Adam Savage. There's a lot out there that I'd like to eventually watch, but my parents' deaths have me not really wanting to get too dramatic. Right now, silly is good.

Bursting Day 2024

Circa April 25, 2024

This one came late. We had a mild winter through until the first day of spring; then it was dreary for weeks, and everything stopped. We're full flowers now.

In other news — I guess life is good?

The girls are grown up and through college; one's in California, one's in northern Vermont. I miss them terribly. With no more excuse for not doing so, I'm finally working full time for the first time since 1998; which is hard to manage, since I'm also volunteering hundreds of hours a year helping run our town recreational soccer program.

I haven't really been fannish-fannish in a long time, but I'm enjoying Boston sports; Taskmaster; and, three episodes into Fallout, I'm willing to watch the 4th.

Bursting Day 2023

This one came out of nowhere. Thursday and Friday we were still all sticks; then everything burst Saturday, April 15.

So, life is good. Kids are now 21 and 24, so all grown up — E graduated from college in 2020, and G has another month to go.

I haven't been fannish in quite a while — there's plenty I like, but stories don't rattle around in my head like they used to.

I've been putting a lot of energy the past few years into helping run my town's youth soccer program. It's incredibly fulfilling — people bring soccer problems to me and I fix them.

Bursting Day 2022

It's been a beautiful, mild spring in eastern Massachusetts.

Since Saturday, things have been bursting; but I'm going to put a stake in yesterday, April 20, as Bursting Day 2022.

It's long past, but LJ has been being difficult.

Anyway... April was glorious, and it was hard to choose a single day of burst. But Let's call Saturday, April 17, 2021, an early Bursting Day.

The time of Bursting, 2020
wneleh
I thought we'd have an early Bursting Day this year - we didn't really have a winter, and have had flowering trees for about a month. But about two weeks ago the weather turned cool and rainy/snowy, and spring just plain stopped for a while. The past few days have been nice, though, and there's been enough greening for me to declare the world Bursted.

I can't really put a day on it, though, so let's go with April 12-25, 2020.

Previous True Bursting Days:

April 28, 2018
April 19, 2017
April 22, 2016
April 25, 2015
April 23, 2014

In other news: we are well, and C and I are employed, though there is sorrow and anxiety and death all around. E is graduating from college in a few days (no job prospects), and G is finishing up her freshman year of college from her bedroom. I'm not doing anything fannish, but I've recently enjoyed Tiger King, The Watchmen, and The Umbrella Academy, and C and I are working our way through The Witcher.

Bursting Day 2019

I'm declaring today, April 21, 2019 (Easter!), Bursting Day 2019.

Bursting Day is the day the world flips from mostly-sticks to largely-flowers.

April 19, 2017
April 22, 2016
April 25, 2015
April 23, 2014

The past three days have seen an almost complete transformation of the world -> forsythias and daffodils and azaleas blooming together.

I see it's been a year since I posted anything, so a quick update: I'm now 52, still working part-time in image processing algorithm development, no longer really engaged in media fandom... my time is mostly taken by work, family, and youth soccer management. Also, still involved in church, about which I could write much.

Change is coming - youngest daughter is finishing high school and is off to college in the fall, probably very far away. Mothering has been my primary focus since her older sister was born 21 years ago - I don't know what shape my life will take come September.

Today was a long time coming.

Dear Yuletide Writer!
wneleh
First off, thanks so much for participating in Yuletide! I can't wait to read your story, and I'm going to love it.

As a fic reader, my general preference is for angsty gen h/c that emphasizes friendship, or sometimes just moments of understanding between adversaries. But if romance is what you do (in any of its iterations) that's fine. If you write something explicitly sexual my reaction is likely to be muted because my RL and fannish worlds are completely intertwined.

Fandom-specific thoughts...

The Orville - I've been enjoying this series a lot, and I'm not sure why, because it's not, yk, GOOD. Anything that helps explain the appeal of ST:TOS-with-penis-jokes would be helpful.

As for plot ideas ideas... Okay, Kelly's a mystery. *WHY* is she so devoted to Ed??? Or, why does Yaphit present himself the way he does? Or, yk, just slash whomever you wish.

Wonder Woman - Honestly I don't remember too much about this movie - as in, I don't remember who lives and who dies - I just remember it was great. (Googling "who survived Wonder Woman" looks to uncap multiple rabbit holes of decades of comic canon and WW2 theorizing. Backing out...) My favorite character, I'm surprised to be typing, was Dr. Maru. Do with this information as you wish (or ignore it entirely).

Pokemon Go - Looking at this tag on AO3, it looks like most fic is actually more focused on game/show canon. I'm a 51-year-old suburban mom; I know NOTHING about the broader Pokemon universe, I just play Pokemon Go obsessively. Like, I'd name my next daughter Eevee. So... really, anything goes - go meta, go RPF, do something with the Youtube community. And Team Mystic Forever.

The Martian - I loved this movie. Looooooved this movie. My favorite fics involve reintegrating Mark into life with other humans.
