Frequently asked questions about art glass and glassmaking
Here are a few common questions and answers for new members to the art glass community.
What is glass made of?
Our glass is made from a blend of limestone, soda ash, and sand. However, we add a unique mixture of chemicals and compounds to create our distinct palette of colors, with most of our recipes being over a century old.
What is art glass?
Art glass is a versatile material available in various shapes, colors, and thicknesses. It is used to create a wide range of items, including window panes, lamps, and various other forms of artistic and functional pieces.
What is a glass kiln?
A glass kiln is a specialized oven used for heating glass to high temperatures to shape, fuse, or cast it into desired forms.
What is the melting point of glass?
The melting point of our glass when raw materials are put into a furnace is about 2200°F (1204°C). Most common types of glass, like soda-lime glass, have a melting point between 2552°F to 2912°F (1400°C to 1600°C). Other types of glass, such as borosilicate glass, melt at a higher temperature, typically around 3002°F (1650°C). These high temperatures are required to transform solid glass into a workable, molten state for processes such as glassblowing, fusing, and casting.
What is glass fusing?
Glass fusing is a technique in which pieces of glass are heated in a kiln until they melt and fuse together.
What is slumping?
Slumping is a kilnforming technique where a sheet of glass is heated in a kiln until it becomes soft enough to “slump” or sag into a mold, taking on the shape of the mold.
