Adult Matric FAQs

Everything adults ask before starting their ASC

Honest answers about how Adult Matric (ASC) at Wingu actually works.

About Adult Matric (ASC)

Adult Matric, or the Amended Senior Certificate (ASC), is a recognised South African school-leaving qualification designed for learners aged 21 and older. It is equivalent in level to the National Senior Certificate, but structured for adults who did not complete matric at school. At Wingu, you prepare for the ASC through an 18-month online programme with structured support and external exams written in May/June.

Adult Matric (ASC) is for learners who never completed Grade 12 or do not have a matric certificate. You complete an Integrated Year (Grade 10-11 content) and then write ASC exams. A Matric Rewrite is for students who already wrote the NSC and want to improve specific subject marks — they re-register for those subjects and rewrite NSC exams.

The standard Adult Matric track at Wingu runs over one and a half academic years: one Integrated Year that covers the essential Grade 10-11 content, followed by the ASC exam preparation year. This structure is designed to balance speed with depth, so adults can complete matric without compromising understanding.

Once you successfully complete your NSC (Amended), you hold a recognised South African matric certificate issued under the national quality assurance framework. This opens doors to TVET colleges, many higher education programmes (subject to entry requirements), workplace learnerships and training, and career progression that requires a matric as a baseline entry requirement.

Practical questions

No. Adult Matric is fully self-paced. Classes are recorded and available on the platform 24/7. You work through guided activities and assessments at a schedule that fits your life — designed for adults studying after work or on weekends. Optional enhancement workshops and tutoring sessions can be booked where helpful.

Most adult learners plan for around 10-15 hours per week, depending on the number of subjects. Because the programme is self-paced, you can flex the schedule — heavier weeks during quieter work periods, lighter weeks during busy times. Your Student Success Advisor helps you plan.

ASC exams are written in person at approved exam centres in South Africa during the May/June examination session each year. Wingu supports you with information on exam registration and centre selection, but the exams themselves are set and marked externally by SACAI according to national standards.

Yes — that is exactly who this programme is designed for. Recorded classes, self-paced study, and flexible assessment scheduling mean you can study evenings and weekends without compromising your job. Your Student Success Advisor helps you build a sustainable study rhythm.

Curriculum & accreditation

Your Student Success Advisor helps you choose the right combination during onboarding.

Adult Matric uses assessment checkpoints after each grade level within the programme. All assessments are submitted via the online platform. Termly report cards and individual feedback reports keep you on track. Final external ASC exams are written in May/June at approved centres and count 100% towards your matric result — there is no School-Based Assessment (SBA).
