wildturkeyDNA: Where Turkey Hunters Participate in Wild Turkey Science
The Wild Turkey Lab, the National Wild Turkey Federation, Ducks Unlimited, the Low Country Game Bird Foundation, and the University of Texas at El Paso are partnering with wild turkey hunters to conduct exciting genetics research, and we need your help!
During 2026, wildturkeyDNA expands to seek samples from wild turkeys throughout their geographic range – so we want samples from wild turkeys in your neck of the woods! We are expanding this state-of-the-art research project to better understand more complex issues related to wild turkey genetics, such as genetic diversity, inbreeding potential, gene flow, hybridization, and more. To address these topics with important implications to wild turkey populations, we need samples that cover broad areas of the species range. So, please consider registering to participate in our rapidly growing project.
When launched in 2025, wildturkeyDNA first sought to understand the origin of odd plumage colors in wild turkeys. Hunters that harvested a turkey with odd or interesting plumage (feather colors), were asked to request a kit so we could use a sample from the harvested turkey to determine whether the bird was wild, a Heritage turkey (which is a cross between a wild and domestic bird), or something else. During 2026, we are continuing this existing research! So, if you harvest a turkey during spring 2026 with odd plumage, please register for a kit below and help us better understand the origin of unique plumage patterns.

FAQ
Got questions? We have answers.
Does it cost anything to participate in wildturkeyDNA?
No, through funding and support provided by wildturkeyDNA’s partners, all costs for submission and analysis of samples are covered.
Are there other ways I can support this project?
Yes, and we thank you for asking! Please contact the customer support line to discuss options for your support.
I shot a turkey with odd plumage, but I’m not a current participant in wildturkeyDNA. Is there another way for me to submit tissue for genetic analysis?
Click the Request Kit button on this page and follow the instructions. We will review the photos of your harvested turkey to determine whether it is of interest for genetic testing.
Instructions
During the 2025 season, hunters will receive a kit only after their harvested turkey has been reviewed and accepted for sampling. Please click “Request Kit” for instructions on how to submit your turkey for consideration.
If accepted, and after receiving your kit, follow these instructions for tissue sampling.
Open the wildturkeyDNA kit and inventory its contents. Each kit should contain:
- 1 uniquely coded sample vial with a preservative solution
- wildturkeyDNA logo sticker
- 2 alcohol wipes
- Quick reference infographic on inner lid
- Pre-attached return shipping label and postage
- If any items are missing, please contact the participant support line: 901-758-3708
Follow these steps when ready to collect the tissue sample (video below):
- Log in to your wildturkeyDNA account at app.wildturkeydna.com.
- From the menu select “New Sample.”
- Enter the requested information (e.g., location, date, etc.) for your harvested turkey.
- Double-check that you entered the vial ID code correctly.
- Wipe or wash hands to remove blood or dirt.
- Carefully unscrew the cap of the sample vial. (Vial may be inserted into the hole in the sampling kit to avoid spillage.)
- Clean the blade of a sharp knife or scissors with provided alcohol wipes.
- Cut a ¼”-long section from the tip of the tongue. The tissue must fit loosely into the vial.
- Place the tissue into the vial and close the cap firmly. Shake the tube to ensure the tissue is immersed in the preservative.
- Store the collected sample in the freezer until ready for return shipping.
- Use the pre-attached, self-adhesive tape to seal the box before shipping back to the Lavretsky Lab.
- Simply drop off the sealed kit at your local post office or mailbox.
REMINDERS
- Store all collected samples in a freezer until ready for return shipping.
