With connection to the Sonoma landscape as the primary design objective, Allegra Diggins and Sena Tudisco of Ridge Design + Build created Villa Verde to simultaneously exist both indoors and outdoors. Every detail contributes to this connection, from the natural building materials, to the expansive glazing. The large picture windows have seats built into them at the most scenic overlooks, and the steel overhang for the 42` multi-sliding door was engineered to need as few supports as possible, so as to not interrupt the view.

“Architecture should disappear into the landscape,” Diggins says. “If you notice the view before you notice the frame, we’ve done our job.”

Every moment in this home is framed, and the flow from one view to the next follows a rhythm. Some of these moments encourage longer pauses with a view undisturbed by a frame, allowing the viewer to be visually immersed in the natural surroundings.

This weekend marked a wrap on @modernism_week, the annual celebration of all things midcentury modern in Palm Springs. The hub of midcentury style and culture played host to dozens of architectural tours, hundreds of events, and attracted attendees from all over the world.

One of these featured tours was of Soleil House, a home discovered and restored by Trina Turk, fashion designer and midcentury enthusiast. This home features floor-to-ceiling glazing in true Desert Modernism form, which allow breathtaking views of the valley and easy access to the deck and pool.

We were honored to participate in a world-renowned event centered around the architectural period that heavily influenced, if not led, the rise in modern indoor/outdoor living, and oversized glazing.

When presented with the opportunity to help bring this home back to its former midcentury glory, we couldn`t say no. Discovered in a state of disrepair, but full of potential, the Palm Springs residence was adopted by fashion designer, Trina Turk, and she had a vision to breathe life back into it. By restoring and enhancing the home`s Desert Modernism elements, and adding her own warmth and quirk, she made Soleil House a home worthy of its place as a @modernism_week show home (with sold out tours), and we are thrilled to have been involved.

As Trina Turk put it, one of the defining characteristics of a Palm Springs midcentury modern home is that "...most importantly, there`s a real indoor-outdoor connection that`s achieved through walls of glass, or sliding doors...that really blur the line between what is interior and exterior space."
