INTRODUCTION

On behalf of the World Federation of Music Therapy, the Italian Association of Music Therapy (AIM), the Italian Federation of Music Therapy (FIM)  and Punto di Svolta – Music Therapy Professional Association (PDS), we are pleased to welcome you to Bologna, vibrant heart of culture and dialogue, for the 18th World Congress of Music Therapy from July 7 – July 12, 2026 “Connecting Borders. Creating Networks and Enhancing Identities through Music Therapy.”

This event represents a unique opportunity to reflect together on how music therapy can unite diverse worlds, build connections, and break down barriers. It will be a moment to explore how music therapy can contribute to the creation of deep bonds, respecting both individual and community identity values, and the complexity of a constantly evolving world.

Borders of music therapy

Innovation and Tradition in Clinical Practice
We will explore the integration of digital technologies and traditional methodologies, analyzing innovative clinical approaches tailored to adapt flexibly to clients’ needs. Through recent experiences and research contributions, we will deepen our understanding of the therapeutic impact of music in new forms of intervention.

Cultural borders

Music Therapy in a Global and Cultural Context
We will examine how local musical traditions and practices can enrich the landscape of music therapy in an increasingly interconnected world. Listening, inclusion, understanding, and embracing diversity will serve as cornerstones for fostering approaches that respect cultural variety, ethics, and human rights.

Interdisciplinary borders

Networks, Relationships, and Multidisciplinary Work
We will highlight the collaboration between music therapists and other professional figures. By rethinking the borders between distinct disciplines, we will emphasize the experiences of teams that promote integrated interdisciplinary and multiprofessional approaches. Guided by ethical and professional standards, the team can foster dialogues and reflections that place the person at the center.

Personal and interpersonal borders

Music Therapy, Identity, and Relationships
We will delve into the role of music therapy in recovering of personal identity within preventive, therapeutic, and rehabilitative contexts. It will be an opportunity to explore the dynamics of the relationship between music therapists and clients, as well as among colleagues, focusing on: the therapeutic alliance; the perception and definition of the physical and mental spaces of the music therapy setting; the appropriate proximity to others; the body as a boundary to be respected, revitalized, and valued.

This congress will serve as a vibrant meeting point to exchange practices, research, and visions, where the openness to embrace new perspectives and the constant spirit of inquiry will be key to shaping the future of music therapy in a complex and interconnected world.

As a collaborative team comprising the Italian Association of Music Therapy, the Italian Federation of Music Therapy (FIM) and Punto di Svolta – Music Therapy Professional Association (PDS), we are honored to organize the 18th World Congress of Music Therapy. As hosts, we are committed to making this event an unforgettable experience for all.

The Italian Association of Music Therapy (AIM) is a professional association dedicated to safeguarding, promoting and advancing the field of Music Therapy in Italy.

AIM establishes and publishes a list of AIM professional Music Therapists who operate throughout the national territory, offers resources to safeguard clients following Italian law (4/2013), and ensures its members comply with the code of ethics.

The association was founded in 2002 and is a member of the World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) and the European Music Therapy Confederation (EMTC). AIM is registered with the MIMIT.

The Italian Federation of Music Therapists (FIM), is a professional organization founded in 1998 by professionals who started a humanistic music therapy project based on epistemological principles: Humanistic music therapy F.I.M. – A.P.M.M. Giulia Cremaschi Trovesi.  It was created to connect different epistemological visions that place the individual, in their being-in-the-world, at the center.

For us, music therapy is a discipline based on the scientific knowledge of acoustic physics, academic musical studies, instrumental practice, general culture, education, and music pedagogy. FIM is accredited by the MIUR pursuant to Dir 170/2016 and registered with the MIMIT. FIM is a member of WFMT and EMTC.

PUNTO DI SVOLTA is a professional association dedicated to promoting and enhancing the field of Humanistic Transformative Music Therapy (MUT). Its professionals work to improve people’s quality of life and well-being focusing on the person as a whole. They use music and musical elements such as sound-rhythm-melody-harmony within an empathically meaningful relationship.

The association is dedicated to promoting the recognition and advancement of music therapists who adhere to Roberto Ghiozzi’s Transformative Humanistic Music Therapy approach.

PUNTO DI SVOLTA  is registered with the MIMIT, and is a member of WFMT and EMTC.

PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE

Dear colleagues,
Dear congress participants,

We are pleased to welcome you to the WCMT 2026 World Congress, which will take place in Italy for the first time in the history of the World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT).

Hosting this congress in Italy is a source of great pride and responsibility for us. Italy, a historical crossroads of cultures, languages, and musical traditions, offers a symbolic and tangible space for meeting, dialogue, and connection among people and communities from all over the world.

The congress has been made possible through the collaborative effort of the three Italian professional music therapy associationsAIM – Italian Association of Music Therapy Professionals, Punto di Svolta – Professional Music Therapy Association, and FIM – Italian Federation of Music Therapists – working together with a shared vision and a strong commitment to promoting quality, ethics, and the development of music therapy at both national and international levels.

The congress theme, Connecting Borders, fully reflects the meaning we attribute to this gathering: creating spaces of sharing and inclusion that embrace what makes each of us unique – our culture, our history, our music, and our professional identity – moving beyond geographical boundaries, distances, stereotypes, and prejudices.

This represents the profound value of music and of our profession: a universal language grounded in empathy and deep, unconditional listening, capable of fostering authentic and meaningful human connections.

Welcome to Bologna, where connections resonate beyond every border.
