NVIDIA has just showcased its next-generation upscaling technology, called DLSS 5, bringing a leap in gaming graphics and visuals.
NVIDIA DLSS 5 Is The Most Unexpected Announcement At GTC 2026, & It Looks Mind-Blowing
The most unexpected thing happened at GTC 2026, and that is the announcement of DLSS 5, the next major update to the DLSS suite.

The following is what NVIDIA's CEO, Jensen Huang, had to say about DLSS 5 during GTC:
We fused controllable 3D graphics, the ground truth of virtual worlds, the structured data of generated worlds, We combined 3D graphics with generative AI and probabilistic computing. One of them is completely predictive, the other one is probabilistic yet highly realistic. We combined these two ideas, controlled through structured data, controlled perfectly, and yet generating at the same time. And the result, the content is beautiful, amazing, as well as controllable.
Based on what we can tell, NVIDIA's DLSS 5 technology isn't just stepping up the visual quality that is already offered within a single frame; instead, it's taking the quality of the entire rendered image to the next level with enhanced visuals that fundamentally change the original rendered image. Based on the comparisons showcased by NVIDIA, the technology looks way too next-gen for now since we haven't seen anything like this in action yet.
And yes, DLSS 5 will fully honor the original intent of the artist, more here.
NVIDIA just recently introduced its DLSS 4.5 technology at CES 2026, and that will be receiving its major update in the form of MFG 6x later this month. It looks like NVIDIA's DLSS 5 technology is designed with future GPU hardware in mind.
But that future hardware has already been available for a while, and its called Blackwell. The demo during GTC 2026 was ran on a dual RTX 5090 gaming PC but DLSS 5 will be entirely usable on a system with a single RTX 50 GPU. NVIDIA also showcased several titles which will be among the launch titles to utilize the tech and these include:
- Resident Evil Requiem
- Starfield
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Assassin's Creed Shadows
- Delta Force
- Naraka: Bladepoint
- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered
- Sea of Remnants
- Where Winds Meet
- Black State
- CINDER CITY
- NTE: Neverness to Everness
- Justice
DLSS 5 takes a game’s color and motion vectors for each frame as input, and uses an AI model to infuse the scene with photoreal lighting and materials that are anchored to source 3D content and consistent from frame to frame. DLSS 5 runs in real time at up to 4K resolution for smooth, interactive gameplay.
The AI model is trained end to end to understand complex scene semantics such as characters, hair, fabric and translucent skin, along with environmental lighting conditions like front-lit, back-lit or overcast — all by analyzing a single frame. DLSS 5 then uses its deep understanding to generate visually precise images that handle complex elements such as subsurface scattering on skin, the delicate sheen of fabric and light-material interactions on hair, all while retaining the structure and semantics of the original scene.
DLSS 5 provides game developers with detailed controls for intensity, color grading and masking, so artists can determine where and how enhancements are applied to maintain each game’s unique aesthetic. Integration is seamless, using the same NVIDIA Streamline framework used by existing DLSS and NVIDIA Reflex technologies.
The company has already talked about how they want to accelerate path tracing performance by a million times by leveraging AI and RTX advances, as we detailed here.
So while it will be a while before we see DLSS 5 in action, this announcement definitely changes our idea around what an upscaling technology can be, and we can't wait to see DLSS 5 in action. Expect more information later this year as DLSS 5 is set to debut in Fall of 2026.
Availability and Game Developer Support
DLSS 5 will be supported by the industry’s biggest publishers and game developers, including Bethesda, CAPCOM, Hotta Studio, NetEase, NCSOFT, S-GAME, Tencent, Ubisoft and Warner Bros.
