Art Collected by Jack Warner

A Lifetime of Enthusiastic Collecting

The Warner Collection of American Art, showcased on this site, is a testament to the singular passion of Jack Warner (1917-2017). This unique assemblage of art comprises more than 500 works from over 150 artists, all meticulously collected by Jack throughout his lifetime. The collection stands out for its representation of one man’s distinctive vision and taste, shaped by a profound love for American History and American Art.

The artwork was displayed in the Westervelt Warner Museum of American Art in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, from 2003 until the museum closed in 2011. Following Jack’s death, much of the collection was deaccessioned. However, beloved and meaningful pieces have been retained by the family and are frequently on loan for display throughout the country. When able, we note where pieces may be viewed.

Here, we invite you to immerse yourself in the Warner Collection of American Art. You can easily navigate through the collection by type, date, and theme, or explore an alphabetical listing of the artists whose works are included. During his lifetime, Jack took great care to document his thoughts on many of the pieces he collected. Any piece marked with a speaker icon indicates that an audio recording of Jack’s insights is available for your enrichment, making the collection even more accessible and engaging.

Moreover, The Warner Foundation is dedicated to providing educational resources that inspire and inform. We have developed lesson plans and historical context readings that connect specific artworks to historical themes, enriching the learning experience. The collection can also be explored based on which pieces currently have corresponding educational resources. If you have a particular interest in certain artworks or themes you would like to see developed, we encourage you to reach out. Your feedback is invaluable in shaping our educational initiatives.

You can see and learn more about an individual work of art by clicking on the Artist Name.
